North Korea unveils "surprisingly impressive" rival to iPad

North Korea's "impressive" tablethas unveiled its own rival to Apple’s iPad Air - a svelte touchscreen filled with apps, and described by one tourist as “surprisingly impressive”.

There are, of course, a few differences between the 7-inch Samjiyon and Apple’s latest - the main one being that you can’t access the internet.

It’s also only available to a select few - North Korea’s ruling elite. Naturally, though, a few models find their way onto the black market - and offer a peek into live inside the secretive dictatorship.

Jeremy Blum of the South China Morning Post says, “It  is not difficult to find one in electronics stores if you are looking in the right places - North Korea Tech, which we got the images of the device from, has reviews from tourists.”

Oddly, tourists seem to be able to freely take the machine out of the country - one of North Korea Tech’s customers said he declared it on an official form.

[When will the dead outnumber the living on Facebook?]

The machine can’t access “normal” websites, but can access the country’s intranet, offering official news, TV, and educational apps such as “Grand People’s Study House”.

The tablet costs a mere £155, and - refreshingly - has few adverts, and comes with many pre-loaded apps, including 141 ebooks about North Korea.

Unboxing the North Korean tablet

It claims to have a 1.2GHz processor - faster than some Western budget tablets - and reviewers praise its speed and responsiveness.

“I would say that the tablet is quite similar to a Western machine aside from the fact that it can't access the internet,” says Blum. “ The general architecture is the same, and it appears to be running a modified version of Android, so there are obvious similarities there.”

““I can honestly say that the Samjiyon is surprisingly impressive,” says one of North Korea Tech’s customers. “In terms of responsiveness and speed, it can almost compete against the leading tablets out there. Tapping and launching apps feels fairly fluid, instantiating the camera is as fast as the world’s leading tablets, and there is no noticeable lag when playing games I’m familiar with, like Angry Birds.”

There are no Google apps on the tablet - instead, a carefully hand-picked selection including Fishing Joy, Educational Books, and, inevitably, Angry Birds.

“This gadget is not available to all North Koreans; just as a Mercedes Benz S-class sedan is out of reach for most Germans,” says University of Vienna Professor Dr Ruediger Frank.

“The existence of this tablet does not in any way change the fact that the country is, for many of its people, a country of hard manual labour and simple living conditions. It is a useful and entertaining device for a minority in a totalitarian system with a dominant ideology.”

Given the relationship between the two countries, it’s unlikely to be used to watch South Korean star Psy’s Gangnam Style.

Within North Korea, the country’s elite are keen computer users, with Chinese-made tablet PCs and a dedicated North Korean operating system, Red Star, used in place of Windows or Mac OS.

Blum says that the product is very “niche” and restricted to the friends of the regime - and “probably pretty useless” for anyone outside Korea.

North Korea cut off mobile internet access for visitors to the country, part of the cloak of secrecy that surrounds the state.

North Korean defector Kim Heung-Kwang claims that the country’s top science universities train “cyber warriors” to attack Western targets - and that hackers also receive “tuition” from rogue groups in Russia and China.

Blum says, “I'd say that the localized apps and e-books that the device has are great for a Korean reader interested in knowing more about North Korea, but probably pretty useless to someone who has no knowledge of the language.”

Svetlana Johnson, from Hadleigh in Suffolk, took the photos on her camera.
"I tried to wipe the lens," she explained, "but the mist was still on all the pictures of the tree roots. I took pictures of other parts of the garden and the pictures were clear.
"As I took more pictures of the tree, hoping to get rid of the mist, I then noticed that the orange mist was moving.
"It started on the roots and then moved under the chair, before completely disappearing.
"I am therefore wondering if the orange mist was the soul of the tree, which disappeared as the tree was dying."
Ms Johnson, 37, is a science and maths teacher in a secondary school.

Wife uses Daily Mail readers' comments to 'kick out husband'

The front page of an edition of the Daily Mail. Image: AP Photo, Lefteris PitarakisA wife has apparently used the comments section on a Daily Mail article to kick out her "idiot husband".
Tom Cowan of Manchester left some remarks on an article about Kelly Brook, describing the model as "so sexy". He also announced he "would leave my wife and kids for one night with her!"
His outburst prompted a response from someone called Natasha Cowan, also of Manchester.
"My idiot husband forgot his comments are linked to his Facebook account," she stated. "You don't deserve our beautiful kids and I hope your brother has room on his sofa because I'm having the locks changed."
As ever, it's not clear whether the threat is for real or if the exchange is a hoax.
But Tom's remarks have clearly gone down badly with Daily Mail readers - while Natasha has received almost unanimous support.

'Dracula bug' discovered by scientists

The 'Dracula bug'. Image: Natural History Museum:  The 'Dracula bug'. Image: Natural History MuseumMeet the 'Dracula bug'.
Scientists at London’s Natural History Museum have discovered this spookily-coloured creature just in time for Halloween.
The insect has a series of markings on its back that could be said to resemble Count Dracula's face.
However this kind of Dracula sucks plant sap, rather than human blood.
The bug, a type of leafhopper, was found in the museum's wildlife garden. It was first spotted by museum volunteers Cagla Stevenson and Ashleigh Whiffin.
Dr Erica McAlister, fly curator at the museum, said: "The fact this looks like a vampire's face really took us by surprise.
"It's odd to see this spooky little face staring back at you. Leafhopper markings vary a lot, but I've never seen markings in this shape, and all the more appropriate with Halloween coming up.
"This bug is still young and its pattern will darken and blend in as it matures."

Man spends 10 years living in his car

Oscar Almaguer sits in his car. Image: Reuters, Daniel BecerrilFor 83-year-old Oscar Almaguer, life isn't so much the open road as a parking space. For Almaguer lives in his car - and has done so since he and his wife divorced 10 years ago.
His 1967 Volkswagen Beetle spends most of its time in Apodaca on the outskirts of Monterrey in Mexico.

Almaguer keeps his belongings in the trunk, including a bucket of water for washing, some petrol and a pair of shoes.
Cutlery and a plastic cup are stored in the ceiling, while a salt-shaker, a bottle of hot sauce and a container of coffee is kept in the door.
But despite all this, the car still works - more or less.
The wheels and seats are from another Volkswagen model.
Instead of a gear-stick Almaguer uses a plastic bathroom pipe.
And the engine, which comes from a modern VW Sedan, is just about in decent condition - although Almaguer has to start it by short-circuiting two wires under the bonnet.

'I've worn Nazi armband in Asda for three years,' man admits

A sign outside a branch of Asda. Image: Nick Ansell, PA WireA shopper asked to leave a supermarket for dressing in a Nazi uniform has tweeted that he has worn similar items to the store for the past three years.
Paul Dutton, from Cambridge, claimed on Twitter that he was the man escorted from a branch of Asda on Thursday.
But he revealed that this was not the first time he had visited the store in Nazi regalia.
He tweeted: "I wear a black SS armband in Asda twice a week for past three years.
"I've shopped in Asda since the place was opened twice a week. This is how Asda repay me for my loyalty."
He added that he had wanted to hand out cards promoting his website, which explains the reasons for his fascination with Adolf Hitler.
Police were called to a branch of Asda in Cambridge at 2pm yesterday, following reports of a man wearing what resembled a black SS uniform complete with cap and red armband.
The manager of the Beehive Centre store asked the man to leave after complaints from other customers. A police spokeswoman said: "By the time we got there he had already left peacefully."
Rosina Rusin, 60, from Milton, told the Cambridge News: "I was waiting in a queue when a lady came up and she was really quite distressed about it.
"People's mouths were falling open. You are not going to come out like that unless you want to draw attention to yourself."
It had been thought the man was part of a Halloween stunt.

The 25-year-old German international tweeted a photo of his team-mates dressed in military fatigues and looking well-armed ahead of his team's game against Liverpool.
Featuring the likes of Mikel Arteta, Olivier Giroud and Jack Wilshere, the players’ images had been superimposed over a poster for the Expendables movie, which stars Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, by an Arsenal fan.
There has been no word about whether Mickey Rourke would appear on the substitutes' bench.

Idris Elba hospitalised ahead of Mandela film premiere

Idris Elba actor: Idris Elba stars as Nelson Mandela in the film Long Walk to FreedomThe British actor Idris Elba has been hospitalised after suffering an asthma attack as he prepared to fly to South Africa for the premiere of his new film.
The 41-year-old, who plays Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, was taken off an aircraft before leaving the UK.
He missed a news conference in Johannesburg to promote the film, the Mail and Guardian reported, but he is expected to recover in time for the premiere on Sunday.
The film, due for release early in 2014, sees Elba star alongside Naomie Harris - who plays Mr Mandela's wife Winnie.
It follows the anti-apartheid icon's life from childhood, through to his protests and imprisonment on Robben Island and his eventual election as South Africa's head of state.
Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Elba spoke of his spending several months in South Africa to prepare for the role.
He said: "I moved to South Africa for about three months prior to shooting, just so that I could understand what South Africa was like ... and to understand the tribes, especially Mr Mandela's.
"The challenges were massive but we embraced them. He had a very difficult life, so we weren't expecting to make an easy film."

Family flees home after venomous spiders hatch from banana

A Brazilian Wandering spider. Image: Wikimedia CommonsA family was forced to temporarily abandon their home after dozens of venomous spiders hatched from a banana.
The Taylors, of Hampton in south-west London, spent several nights in a hotel while their house was fumigated.
Mrs Consi Taylor was the first to spot the creatures, which dropped off the banana while she was eating it.
She told the Sun: "I got halfway through the banana when I saw something white on the skin. I thought it was mould but when I had a closer look I saw some funny looking spots.
"I had a closer look and was horrified to see they were spiders."
They were later identified as Brazilian Wandering spiders, listed in the 2010 Guinness World Records as the world's most venomous spider.
Few people die from the creature's bites, however, and antivenom treatment is readily available.
The Taylors had purchased the banana from a branch of Sainsbury's.
The supermarket has apologised for the incident, and has paid £1,000 to cover the family's hotel bill, fumigation and dry cleaning.

Floating island of junk the size of Texas nears the US

An island of debris the size of Texas is floating across the Pacific towards the United States.
The junk is wreckage from the tsunami that devastated areas of eastern Japan in 2011.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the "island" is currently to the north-east of Hawaii.
A larger but less concentrated area of debris stretches across the ocean from Alaska to the Philippines.
Wreckage from the tsunami has been reaching the North American coast for the past two years.
In June 2012 a 70ft-dock arrived on a beach in Oregon, while a shrimping vessel nearly made it all the way to Alaska.
Around five million tons is estimated to have been washed into the Pacific by the tsunami, but two-thirds sank quickly near the Japanese coast.

Missing School Nurse Decapitated, Ex-Husband Overdoses As Police Hone In

Hours before police could arrest a South Florida doctor for the brutal murder and mutilation of his ex-wife, detectives witnessed his family carry his lifeless body out of a Miami home after an apparent drug overdose.
The headless body of Kimberly Lindsey, 49, a school nurse, was found in a sugarcane field in Clewiston, Fla. on Friday after she was reported missing five days earlier, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Palm Beach Post. She had also been shot in the chest and her fingertips cut off.
"This is one of the more heinous crimes I've seen in a while," Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a press conference, adding that Lindsey's head and fingertips have not yet been found.
Authorities say Lindsey did not show up for work at West Palm Beach’s Bak Middle School of the Arts on Monday, prompting police to visit her home where they foundsignificant blood indicating foul play.
Based on DNA evidence, police soon began 24-hour surveillance on her ex-husband, Albert Lambert, 52, an emergency room physician.
On Sunday, undercover detectives saw Lambert's sister and boyfriend attempt to carry a sheet-wrapped body from the sister's Miami home.
“We hope they were taking him to the hospital but you never know,” Bradshaw told reporters.
Paramedics tried to revive Lambert, but he was pronounced dead at a Miami hospital due to a narcotics overdose. His death has not been ruled a suicide.
The former couple, married for nearly 22 years, had three daughters together and had been divorced since February.
Just days before Lindsey's disappearance, a judge had found Lambert in contempt of court after he said he would "disappear or go to jail" before he paid any contested alimony or child support.
"The bottom line is we were going to charge him with first-degree murder, no doubt,” Bradshaw said at the press conference.
We don’t believe there’s any other people involved in this," the sheriff told the Palm Beach Post. "Think about it: he’s a doctor — who’s got better skill to do that?”
In a public plea for help in finding her missing mother, Lindsey's oldest daughter called her a "self-made, independent woman" and a mother who was a "nurturing" and "loving."

Bak Middle School officials say that the clinic where Lindsey worked will be named in her honor and grief counselors will available for students, teachers, and parents, reports NBC 6.

14-Pound Utah Baby May Be America's Biggest For 2013

A 14-pound baby may just be America's heaviest for 2013.
Joel Brandon Jr., nicknamed J.J., was born on May 9 by cesarean section at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah. He weighed 14 pounds exactly and was 22 inches long at birth.
baby
"My last ultrasound showed that he was going to be around 11 pounds," J.J.'s mom, Sara Brandon, told The Huffington Post over the phone Wednesday. "So when he came out and he was 14, I think everyone in the whole room -- even the doctors -- was so surprised."
Local news outlet KSL.com reported last week that J.J. may very well be the biggest baby born in the United States this year. KSL also wrote that the "closest American baby to J.J.'s weight reported so far in 2013 was ... Addyson Gale Cessna of Pennsylvania." She weighed 13 pounds 12 ounces.
“We’ve kind of been watching and waiting to see if there is a baby who is bigger, because he might be the biggest of the year," Brandon told KSL of her big bundle of joy.

Because of his size, Brandon says that J.J.'s birth was quite tricky.
"Since they knew he was going to be a big baby, I had two doctors delivering him instead of just one," she explained to the HuffPost. "They said that they had to use some maneuvering for shoulder dystocia that they normally only use in vaginal births -- in other words, he was so big and crammed in there that they had a hard time getting him out."
Born at 38.5 weeks, J.J. suffered respiratory problems and was "blue and floppy" when he was delivered, his mom says. He had to spend his first week and a half of life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Fortunately, J.J. recovered and has been pink and strong ever since.
"He's super healthy and happy now, he's just a really big guy," his mom said.
baby
At his last check-up, J.J.'s pediatrician told his parents that he's in the 150th percentile for height and weight in his age group. Brandon says J.J.'s so large that his diapers are the same size as those of his 2-year-old identical twin sisters.
"This big bubba melts my heart," the happy mom said of her baby. "I love him more than I ever imagined I could love a sweet baby boy. He is my squishy cuddle bug."
J.J. may be the largest baby born in the U.S. this year, but KSL says that the title of biggest newborn in the world may be held by George King of England, who tipped the scales at a whopping 15 pounds 7 ounces when he was born in February.
Though babies weighing 14 pounds or more are still a rarity, experts say that heavier babies have been on the rise in recent years. Citing a report from medical journal Lancet, NBC News wrote in August that there's been a "15 percent to 25 percent increase in babies weighing 8 pounds, 13 ounces or more (or 4,000 grams, the weight where a baby is considered oversized) in the past two to three decades in developed countries."
