Engineers create prototypes of Raytheon's most revolutionary ideas in the Bike Shop, named for the bicycle shop where Wright brothers invented the airplane. Raytheon's skunk works projects are known as true skunk works  projects due to the high level of secrecy, and isolation from the main facilities. The Whirl, as one of the most revolutionary aircrafts in its field, was developed  by "a couple of  radical thinkers" in the Bike Shop of Raytheon.  According to the available informations about The Whirl, it consist four wings and looks like a Frisbee.

The reason of why people in the Bike Shop started to work on the whirl was also interesting. James Small,  the team chef of the Bike Shop, received a call from Pentagon and everything started at that time. Pentagon was in a need of a platform for radar to track moving targets which is also able to stay aloft for days. Mr Small was quite confident about the people in the Bike Shop, and this was why Mr Small said that " We will be back in a week". 

Mission is hard, but not impossible

Mr Small  starts to create his team by picking up the most talented engineers and  specialists for the mission, creating the Whirl. After several brain storms with his crew, the Whirl concept was ready to be presented to Pentagon officials. The officials were quite enthusiastic, but not so sure about the Whirl due to its hight costs for the government at that time.  According to Karp (2004),  just two weeks after that, the Bike Shop team tethered a prototype and began test flights. The guidance system of the Whirl made it unique and extraordinary in its field. 

Raytheon's Success - The benefit of the state. 

Here comes another story about the Bike Shop of Raytheon, that is the secrecy issues at skunk works projects. Some companies prefer to make the products of skunk works projects publicly available,  that skunk works projects might also be called as Pseudo or Transitional Skunk works,  and try to use these products in order to get attention from the customers and public. In defense industry, companies should not make the information regarding to their skunk works project public available. The companies in defense industry should prefer true skunk works type and keep the secrecy as high as possible. The information management of the skunk works projects in defense industry requires special attention. The information about the Whirl, for instance, is no longer available or shared on the internet. This should not be considered just as a secrecy principle of  Raytheon's Bike Shop, because this secrecy is also for the benefit of the state. The Whirl is an example of how Raytheon is managing well the information about its skunk works projects in the Bike Shop.
